A welcome Spring opportunity. After a very long winter, we were finally able to break ground–well, break up the old porch first, actually. Cleveland McCune and his son, of Cleveland’s Earthworks, were on hand to safely remove the old patio structure and shape the ground to accept the larger entry. Master mason Curtis Lowry and Tommy Folks, of Lowry Masonry, snatched up the piers and our own crew followed close behind with the floor framing.
We are currently paused and waiting for the excavator, Cleveland’s Earthworks, to complete the finish grade work around the porch. Once he is finished, we can construct the stairs and handrail and cap another fine design/build project. Over the past several weeks though, we have installed the beautiful tigerwood porch flooring, bead-board ceiling, PermaCast period columns, cedar siding, Windsor-one trim, and custom louver panels to underpin the porch between the masonry piers. JV Telling, of Telling Roofing, was also helpful in installing the Englert metal standing seam roofing.
With a little help from Derek installing the rough-in stair framing and skirt and riser trim, Andrew then took it upon himself to shape and install the tigerwood stair treads. Below is a step-by-step pictorial of the process.
Having the stairs completed made for easy access installing the handrails. Jeremy and Andrew worked together and skillfully fitted the fir handrail components together which makes the new porch safe and finished. Painting weather will most certainly be welcome so that we may put a final coat on this historic home’s new facade.
